Can You Crack Wise with a Nude Recreation Week Email Campaign?
Jul 05 2011, 07:08 PM | by

The second week in July (5-11) is officially Nude Recreation Week. Nervousness over not wanting to get fired from work kept me from doing too much research about Nude Recreation Week, but I can give you a bit of what I gathered. It started as a weekend in the 70s (makes more sense now, doesn’t it?), but has since expanded to a full week. This year the American Association for Nude Recreation (Yes. It does exist, but once again I was too afraid to do any research) is trying to set the Guinness World Record for largest number of people simultaneously skinny-dipping.

What does this have to do with email marketing? Nothing, really. That doesn’t mean it can’t have something to do with it. First of all, email is the perfect form of marketing communication for Nude Recreation Week. It’s a great way to avoid paper cuts in unseemly places. Also, you can’t tell me that you read the words Nude Recreation Week and didn’t laugh. Never underestimate the power of generating a laugh from your subscribers.

Honestly, to play on the safe side, you can borrow the paper cut joke and leave it at that. Maybe just tweak your regularly scheduled email campaign that week to add in the joke and get that laugh. Clothing companies could probably have a field day with this type of campaign, though perhaps they’d be best off with an anti-Nude Recreation Week campaign.

If you really want a bigger laugh, you can go with this following story instead. I attended sleepover camp when I was growing up. In my later years as a camper, we began doing canoe trips down the Wisconsin River. On one such trip, two friends and I got a little too close to the shore. We ran into a sand bar and stopped moving. Getting unstuck became an issue, when we couldn’t stop laughing long enough to do it. Why were we laughing? The shore we got stuck near happened to be a nude beach, populated by elderly, wrinkly, over-sunned Wisconsin folk. One of which, was waddling out to help us. At this point, I was laughing too hard to be of any use to my two stunned friends in the canoe. I had tears streaming down my face as he instructed my friend in the back of the canoe to hop out and help him push us to safety. Obviously, I lived to tell my tale. The funniest part of the story just occurred to me, though. As I was writing this blog, I thought back on when this story occurred. I was always at camp the last two weeks of June and the first two weeks of July. It is more than possible this old man was just observing Nude Recreation Week!
