It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by summer’s heat and humidity. And if you’ve been planting and watering since the start of spring, you’re probably also exhausted.

While the garden “To Do” list can seem to grow as quickly as the weeds, stop worrying about all the things you haven’t done in your yard and take a minute to reflect on all your successes! Remember, appreciating your garden is just as important as caring for it. Pull up a bench, invite a few friends over, and just enjoy your garden for the remainder of summer. Then you can start dreaming of your plans for fall.

Fountain in garden The weather is hot; you’re weary; the family is frazzled, and everyone is in sore need of a trip to get away from it all. How about a nice, long, relaxing vacation? Great! But remember: while you’re away - and hopefully without a care in the world – your garden is not on vacation. It’s left at home, struggling to survive in the heat and lack of needed rainfall. The last thing you want is to worry about your garden while trying to chill and forget. Get some vacation peace of mind: Plan ahead and learn how to prioritize, organize and group your plants by their needs before you depart. That way, your plants will welcome you home with a much happier constitution.

Amaranthus
Botanical Plant Name:
Amaranthus tricolor

Grown in flower gardens for its dazzling plumage, Joseph’s coat bears large elliptic leaves that are often brilliantly hued when young, forming colorful ruffs atop tall, erect stems. In tropical Asia, where this plant is grown as a flavorful leaf vegetable, most cultivated forms have all-green foliage. Joseph's coat performs best in sun and well-drained soil. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in subtropical and tropical regions, but is often grown in Northern climes as an annual. Use it in containers and borders, and as a colorful garnish for salads.
