A Toast to the Two-Four Holiday!

Observed since before the confederation of the Canadian provinces, Victoria Day originally honored Queen Victoria’s birthday. Today it honors both the late Queen and the United Kingdom’s currently reigning monarch; it is the only mandatory day in Canada when the Union Jack must be flown from sunrise to sunset from all federal buildings.

This unofficial end of winter also marks the time of year when parks, outdoor restaurants and city tours open in earnest, and stores on Prince Edward Island are allowed to stay open on Sundays from now until Christmas Day. In a jocular fashion, many Canadians refer to Victoria Day as the Two-Four Holiday, as not only is the holiday celebrated on or before May 24 but “Two-Four” is a Canadianism for a 24 case or “square” of beer.
