Are
your emails reaching recipients' inboxes?
According
to estimates, nearly 19 percent of legitimate
emails are blocked by ISPs. Even those emails
that have taken the pain of confirming via doubt-opt
in are non-delivered along with spam emails
There are countless factors responsible for
non-delivery of legitimate emails, content triggering
keywords, email size, too many images in the
email, high unidentified user rates, improper
email configurations, and blacklist inclusion,
to name a few.
The growing
concern for spam has resulted in stringent anti-spam
filters, strict rules and regulations by email
service providers (yahoo, AOL, Hotmail and others)
for delivering emails to their users and sender
identification protocols like Sender Policy
Framework (SPF) and Yahoo domain keys.
SPF and
Domain Keys authenticate a sender's email address,
thereby blocking spam senders, who disguise
the origin of their e-mail, a practice known
as e-mail spoofing. Many ISP's look for SPF
records to validate whether the email came from
the domain they say it is from. If the SPF or
Domain Key query is not authenticated, the email
is often blocked.
The anti-spam
filter can block your emails if your subject
line or email body copy has anti-spam filter
triggering words. Often, your IP address might
fall in the range of addresses suspected of
spamming and already blacklisted by blacklists'
service providers. There are varied factors
affecting email delivery but they all lead to
lose of valuable prospects and customers, and
potential loss in revenue.

Deliverability
of an email depends on the internal and external factors.
Internal factors might include email list, infrastructure,
server configuration, html design, content, sender
address and subject line. While, the external factors
are anti-spam filters, ever-changing criteria by email
clients, corporate houses, algorithms and filters
used by ISPs, changing rules of email deliverability
by ISPs and new anti-spam policies and laws.
External factors
are beyond your control; however, you can make a few
changes in the internal settings to improve your email
deliverability.

Confirm from your recipients through double opt-in
process whether they want to receive your emails
or not |
 |
Avoid using words in the content that can trigger
anti-spam filters. ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, excessive
punctuation, excessive use of "click here,"
$$, and other symbols , words like Free, unlimited,
credit card, guarantee, Million dollar and other
red flag words |
 |
Avoid using quotation marks, exclamation marks,
all capital letters, and dollar mark or toll number
in the subject line |
 |
Prominently display your company’s name
in the ‘from address’ |
 |
Use valid email addresses that are easily verified
by the SPF and Domain Keys. If you have questions
on SPF, please contact our customer support, they
will help you with SPF authenticated email address.
|
 |
Request recipients to include your email address
in their white lists. Many large email service
providers such as AOL and Yahoo, Hotmail have
specific white listing procedures and postmaster
website areas to ensure email deliverability,
as long as, you meet their guidelines and procedures
in handling your opt-in list. |
 |
Honor each and every unsubscribe request |
 |
Verify whether your IP address is blacklisted
or not |
 |
Avoid developing email messages that are entirely
images, instead, give hyperlinks in the email
so that recipients can access the content from
your website |
 |
Keep the size of your email message small |
|
| |
If
email
marketing is one of your major promotional tools,
it is imperative to go through the CAN-SPAM regulations
and be compliant with the law. After following the tips,
you still might not be getting all your emails delivered
but non-delivery rate will reduce considerably. |
