Newsletter Topics - Software Updates
Windows Server 2003 Support
nCipher has just released the latest HSM software update, Version 7.20, which includes full support for Microsoft Windows 2003, including Windows 2003 Certificate Services and the latest version of Microsoft's Internet Information Server, IIS6. PKCS#11 Enhancements

Software Version 7.20 also sees the introduction of a new Security Assurance Mechanism (SAM) technology for PKCS#11 implementations that increases security and reduces software development and audit time. Until now the PKCS#11 interface allowed programmers to inadvertently implement insecure solutions - set one parameter incorrectly and someone later could extract your key in plaintext and read all your data! nCipher's new SAM technology automatically and dynamically checks each PKCS#11 operation and prevents those that would compromise security, unless explicitly permissioned. The technology can be used to provide assurance for both custom and standard off-the-shelf products.

For more information on these and other updates, please read our Customer Bulletin.

Newsletter Topics - Partnerships
nCipher has just announced a strategic partnership with payments solutions specialist Orbiscom to deliver a secure online payment infrastructure solution. nCipher's payShield Hardware Security Module (HSM) now integrates with Orbiscom's Controlled Payment Application Platform to provide banks, credit card and payment processor companies, other financial service institutions the opportunity to implement cardholder and payment authentication systems that satisfy the requirements of the MasterCardR SecureCode and Visa's Verified by Visa initiatives.

Newsletter Topics - How customers are using nCipher
NTT DATA Corporation have selected an Orbiscom/nCipher solution for their CAFIS Access Control Server (ACS) ASP service, part of the roll-out of the Verified by Visa program in Japan. NTT DATA is using nCipher's payShield hardware security modules to manage valuable SSL keys, XML encryption keys and XML signing keys. This prevents attackers from gaining inappropriate access to XML communications, combating eavesdroppers and ensuring the integrity of information. In addition payShield is used to protect database encryption keys to provide the highest level of security for stored data. NTT Data recognises that very highest level of cryptographic security is essential for an outsourced service that must deliver the highest levels of assurance to customers while meeting stringent service availability requirements.

Newsletter Topics - Tech Tip
nCipher has created new utilities that enable you to better maintain your systems. Starting with this newsletter, we'll be introducing you to these features and how they can help you.

1. ncversions displays the versions of installed nCipher support software components, which you can review with nCipher support when determining upgrade paths.

2. nfkmverify is a utility that can be used to verify key generation certificates, allowing you to confirm how a particular security world and key are protected. You can also verify and review information about the security world and key.

3. cardpp allows you to confirm and change passphrases for your smart cards.

4. nopclearfail is a utility that can clear a module or put it into an error state, which is especially useful for simulating a failed environment as it will not harm the hardware. nopclearfail can also be used to retry connections to a failed module.

For more information on these or other useful nCipher software utilities, please contact nCipher Support.
