Last summer was my first in California and it was filled with many new traditions and experiences. Fourth of July weekend rolled around and I found myself working on a project in San Diego. The project ended up being a disaster, but Independence Day was a welcome oasis in the middle of the hectic weekend.
One thing that almost everyone does on the 4th is BBQ. Several of us took turns manning the grill and we served up enough burgers and dogs to feed a small army. That was the typical part of our 4th of July. Fireworks are the other staple. Except in California there’s an opportunity to take fireworks up a notch. We headed out and up onto the highest hill we could find. From there we could see seven or eight different fireworks shows going on all around the San Diego area and surrounding towns. Growing up in the flatlands of the Midwest, this was a new concept to me. It was one of many new California experiences that will stay with me for a long time.
