The family of one of my good friends from high school throws a post-Thanksgiving party every year known as Turquila. After we’re all done with our own family gatherings, we reconvene at her parents’ house for the real festivities. It’s a reunion we all look forward to. As much fun as I enjoy seeing all my friends, my favorite part might just be the tequila. Her father has bottles upon bottles brought in of some of the finest tequilas on the planet. He does an explanation of each one, but it’s really just a formality. We’re there to start throwing ‘em back. I love my tequila as much as I love the fact that her parents’ house is walking distance to my parents’ house and I can walk (re: stumble) home whenever I’m through. My parents even know not to bother me the next morning.
On Cinco de Mayo, I don’t even need a clever name mashup of the holiday for an excuse to drink tequila. I’ve never been much of a Corona and lime type guy, so tequila is my beverage of choice for such an occasion (and any occasion). Living in Los Angeles, I don’t have to look far for a celebration…and I believe I’ve made it pretty clear I don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate. However, I am happy to celebrate a culture that has greatly contributed to the city I live in.
