The 4th of July is a favorite time of the year for marketers. There are always sales abound and businesses can cash in on some patriotic points without garnering a sideways look. It’s a time to celebrate our country, family and friends. A marketing plan that makes your customers wax nostalgic about Independence Days of yesteryear will be especially successful. Most of my memories of the 4th growing up are from camp. The day would be filled with color wars, then a BBQ dinner and a campfire and fireworks by the lake after sunset … arm in arm with friends. To put you in that mindset, here are my Benchmark 5: Songs for Fireworks, Campfires and more!

  1. “You’ve Got a Friend” – James Taylor
  2. “Lean on Me” – Bill Withers
  3. “Cats in the Cradle” – Harry Chapin
  4. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” – John Denver & Cass Elliot
  5. “Wonderwall” – Oasis

by Andy Shore

Andy Shore found his way to Benchmark when he replied to a job listing promising a job of half blogging, half social media. His parents still don’t believe that people get paid to do that. Since then, he’s spun his addiction to pop culture and passion for music into business and marketing posts that are the spoonful of sugar that helps the lessons go down. As the result of his boss not knowing whether or not to take him seriously, he also created the web series Ask Andy, which stars a cartoon version of himself. Despite being a cartoon, he somehow manages to be taken seriously by many of his readers ... and few of his coworkers.
