Happy Birthday, O Canada!

Often dubbed Canada’s Birthday, July 1 is celebrated each year to commemorate the union of Novia Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec into a federation under the dominion of the British Empire. Quebec was subsequently split into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec and Canada Day has not been called Dominion Day since 1982, but the merriment of the confederation’s national joy has been undaunted. Fifties Windsor and Detroit celebrate Canada Day as part of the International Freedom festival and fireworks are regularly set off over the Detroit River where the United States and Canada meet.

In Quebec, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day since provincial legislature passed a law forbidding landlords from evicting tenants in winter. Thus the majority of leases in Quebec last one year and begin on July 1!
