This week I had the great pleasure of attending the Sound City Players show on a closed down Hollywood Blvd. with more than 10,000 others. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will not soon forget. I decided to dedicate this week’s Benchmark 5 to it, as an excuse to relive it while I work. So, here is the Benchmark 5: things we can learn from the Sound City Players. If you have no idea what Sound City was/is, watch the trailer here:
1.Discover the common thread for success. Dave Grohl set out to make a short video looking at the recording console at the old Sound City recording studio. It wound up being an incredible documentary which tied together some of the biggest music acts of the last 40+ years. They had all recorded at Sound City, through that custom console.
2.Celebrate new and old. Sound City saw bands like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Fleetwood Mac up to Nirvana and Metallica. The documentary honored all of them. The Sound City Players consists of the Foo Figthers as a backing band to artists such as John Fogerty, Rick Springfield and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. It’s a blend of old and new that creates something fresh and so incredibly awesome.
3. If you’re having fun, everybody else will too. There was 10,000+ people on Hollywood Blvd. for the Sound City Players show. Nobody there was having more fun than Dave Grohl. His smile and energy was contagious and the crowd gave it back tenfold.
4.Put your egos aside. Rock stars notoriously have huge egos. They were held in check for the Sound City Players show, each one giving Grohl a warm embrace as they entered or left the stage. It’s clear that the Sound City Players are a mutual admiration society. The result is a unique rock show experience that wowed all in attendance.
5.Be a chameleon. Dave Grohl moves back and forth between being the frontman on guitar and vocals and then back to the drums with ease. He also has played with Nirvana, the Foo Figthers and Them Crooked Vultures as a member. I’ve already mentioned the artists he performed with for the Sound City Players and the list doesn’t even end there. Learn to be adaptable and you too could work with some of the biggest stars in your industry.
