I was listening to sports talk radio recently on my commute home from work. The subject had veered off the sports path and into cereals. The question was: what is your favorite cereal? It turned into more of a debate when somebody answered oatmeal. Is oatmeal a cereal? Sure it is. It’s a hot cereal. The hosts weren’t having it. They were much more on board with answers like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Wheaties or Cheerios. The oatmeal supporters didn’t even play their biggest and best card during the argument. None of those other cereals even have their own holiday named after them. Oatmeal? Oatmeal has its own month. January is National Oatmeal Month.
I’m with the radio hosts. Oatmeal is yucky. It’s mushy, throw up looking grossness. No amounts of cinnamon, sugar or fresh fruit can make it edible for me. Is this conversation silly? Yes, yes it is.
That brings me to my point. I can’t tell you anything else those sports radio hosts discussed that afternoon. Sometimes it’s the silly stuff that sticks. Your subscribers may not remember your Season’s Greetings email campaign or the deal you offered up for New Year’s. They very well may remember a campaign celebrating National Oatmeal Month.
